Wenyen Gabriel Parents: Meet Makuac Gob and Rebecca Gak

Wenyen Gabriel was born to parents, Makuac Gob and Rebecca Gak.

Gabriel was given the Dinka name “Wenyen,” which means “Wipe your tears” in his home tongue because his sister had died in infancy a year before.

Gabriel’s mother, Rebecca Gak, relocated her family to Cairo, Egypt, to escape the Second Sudanese Civil War two weeks after he was born.

It was his younger brother Komot, 7, who took care of Gabriel the entire while his mother worked to save money for the relocation of his paternal grandfather to Cairo.

The United Nations agreed to relocate the refugee family to Manchester, New Hampshire, a U.S. city with a sizable South Sudanese population, two years after they had been in Egypt.
