Wayne Ellington is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played for the University of North Carolina from 2006 to 2009.

He chose to forgo his final season of college eligibility to declare for the 2009 NBA draft and was drafted 28th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

On July 10, 2016, Ellington joined the Miami Heat as an unrestricted free agent from the New Orleans Saints. A damaged thigh had kept him out of the Miami Heat’s first 16 games of the season, but he returned against the Boston Celtics on November 28, 2016, he played 27 minutes and scored nine points.

In a 113–101 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on December 22, 2017, Ellington tied a career-high with 28 points and a career-high eight 3-pointers.

With his 200th 3-pointer of the season, Ellington became only the third Miami Heat player in NBA history to do it, joining Damon Jones (225) and Tim Hardaway Sr. (200). (203).

Against the Raptors in overtime, the Heat beat them 116–109 to clinch the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs on April 11, 2018, as Ellington had a career-high 32 points and set Miami’s single-season record for 3-pointers.

To surpass Jones’ record of 225 made 3-pointers in a season established in 2004–05, Ellington needed six more in the last game. His final season score was 227.
