Wayne Ellington is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
He played for the University of North Carolina from 2006 to 2009. He chose to forgo his final season of college eligibility to declare for the 2009 NBA draft and was drafted 28th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Ellington averaged 11.7 points per game while appearing in all 38 games for the ACC Champion Tar Heels in 2006–07. This year’s ACC All-Tournament Team included him.
Unfortunately for him, North Carolina’s NCAA Tournament run came to an end with a loss to Georgetown in the East Regional final.
A last-second 3-point attempt by him would have given him the opportunity to win the game in regulation. In 2007, Ellington competed for the United States in the Pan American Games, where the team finished in fifth place.
Ellington’s average points per game rose as the Tar Heels more relied on him in crucial times of games as a sophomore.
Ellington scored a career-high 36 points against Clemson on January 6, 2008, including the game-winning three-pointer with 0:00 left.
