Freedom Convoy 2022 organizer Tamara Lich has been arrested tonight by Ottawa police. Her arrest was confirmed by journalist Joe Warmington.
Two photos are being circulated of at least one police officer handcuffing Lich in downtown Ottawa near Parliament Hill. Last night, Lich posted a message to social media where she appeared to accept that she would soon be arrested.
“There’s a pretty good chance — well I think it’s inevitable at this point — but, uh, I’ll probably be going somewhere tomorrow [Thursday] where I’ll be getting three square meals a day. And that’s OK,’ Lich said.
“I’m OK with that. And I want you to know that I am not afraid,” she added.
Why Was Tamara Lich Arrested?
As of the time of this writing, no official charges have been made against Tama Lich. Tamara Lich, one of the leaders of the demonstration, was arrested on Thursday night, after promises from police officials of an “imminent” clampdown on the occupation. The Ottawa protesters vow to stay put. Their counterparts elsewhere didn’t.
Chris Barber, another key organizer of the Freedom Convoy protest, was also arrested in Ottawa on Thursday. Barber, who is a senior convoy leader, is expected to face criminal charges according to the CBC. He has previously said in a press release that politicians have declined to engage in “serious dialogue.”
The arrest comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act on Monday, which gives the government power to clear protests by towing vehicles, and even more direct measures such as freezing personal bank accounts.
