Questions about a Bladen County electioneer are swirling as the North Carolina Board of Elections analyzes the results of the 9th Congressional District election between Republican Mark Harris and Democrat Dan McCready.
McCrae Dowless has been well-known in Bladen County politics for many years.
Dowless, also known as McCrae, was the vice-chair of the Bladen County Soil and Water Conservation District, a post he was elected to.
Dowless was better renowned for his contributions to other people’s campaigns than for his own.
Attempts to contact Dowless were futile. When Channel 9 visited the Bladen County Soil and Water Conservation District Office, an employee told Channel 9 that Dowless only comes in for meetings and rarely uses computers.
Dowless has a long history of criminal activity extending back to the 1980s.
Dowless was sentenced to six months in jail in 1992 after being convicted of felony fraud. Dowless has also been charged with perjury in the past.
Dowless has worked on the campaigns of several major local and statewide politicians despite his criminal history.
Dowless’ political career has been around increasing voter turnout.
Dowless’ first significant election, according to campaign finance disclosures, came in 2010, when he worked for Harold Butch Pope’s Bladen County district attorney campaign.
Dowless was paid $7,127 by the Pope campaign during the course of the year.
