Mac McClung is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), on a two-way contract with the South Bay Lakers of the NBA G League.
As a sophomore on the varsity basketball team at Gate City High School, McClung began dunks.
The rest of his high school career saw him rise to prominence as an acrobatic dunker. He was named one of the most exciting players in the country by MaxPreps.
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) Region 2A West tournament saw him post a career-high 64 points in his junior year against Dan River High School.
Among Virginia public schools, it was the best ever and the highest since 1984.
The Bristol Herald Courier named him Southwest Virginia Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year after he finished the season averaging 29.0 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.0 steals per game for the Blue Devils.
During the summer, he made a decision to play collegiate football for Rutgers. Against Lee High School on December 12, he made his senior debut, scoring 47 points and shooting 18 of 23 from the field. There was Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing in attendance.
