As the first openly homosexual male footballer in the UK since Justin Fashanu in 1990, Jake Daniels of Blackpool Football Club has made history.
It was time for the forward, then just 17, to tell the rest of football what he’d already told his family: that he was gay.
When Daniels was seven years old, he joined Blackpool and began his football career.
His professional career began in February when he signed his first professional deal with the team after playing for them since he was 18.
For the remainder of the season, he was loaned out to Bamber Bridge for most of March.
Last Saturday, he did make his Blackpool debut as a substitute in a 5-0 loss to Peterborough.
And Daniels said in his statement that his choice to come out was influenced in a positive way by Blackpool.
